Railway nostalgia in the Swiss Alps
The Furka Mountain Steam Railway connects Realp in the canton of Uri with Oberwald in the canton of Valais over a distance of around 18 kilometres. The line runs through a largely unspoilt high‑alpine landscape, along steep slopes, through narrow gorges and up to more than 2,000 metres above sea level.
Historic locomotives and carriages operate on the metre‑gauge rack railway—many of them over 100 years old. They have been painstakingly restored and returned to working order by volunteers.
Operations are supported by Dampfbahn Furka‑Bergstrecke AG, the Furka‑Bergstrecke Association, the Furka‑Bergstrecke Foundation and the Steam Locomotive Friends.
